Bradley Steven Glascock, a 24-year-old Florida State Trooper, tragically lost his life on August 4, 1977, in Miami, Florida. Trooper Glascock was conducting a routine traffic stop on the Dolphin Expressway (Route 836) when he encountered a driver who had failed to pay a ten-cent toll. The incident escalated quickly as the driver repeatedly backed up his vehicle to avoid a collision with the trooper's car.
Trooper Glascock decided to arrest the suspect, but as he approached the vehicle, the suspect retrieved a .38-caliber handgun and shot Trooper Glascock twice, resulting in his death.
The suspect fled the scene, prompting a massive manhunt across Miami. The police, aided by a description and partial license plate provided by a civilian ride-along who was with Trooper Glascock, were able to identify the suspect. The suspect's vehicle and the murder weapon were recovered during the investigation. Roadblocks were set up throughout the city, and after two days, the suspect, unable to leave town, turned himself in to the authorities.
The suspect, a 31-year-old man, was charged with first-degree murder. He pled guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. His parole requests were denied in 2011 and again in 2017, and as of November 2020, he remained incarcerated. It led to the state cabinet's decision to provide bullet-resistant vests to all state troopers, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
