In the early morning hours of April 1, 2020, the life of 18-year-old Trent Thomas Parkerson was tragically cut short in Trussville, Alabama. A senior at Hewitt-Trussville High School, Parkerson was known for his involvement in extracurricular activities, including playing on the football and wrestling teams. He was remembered for his contagious smile and his ability to bring laughter to any situation.
The incident that led to Parkerson's death unfolded in the 7600 block of Happy Hollow Road just after 3 a.m. A fellow Hewitt-Trussville High School student, 17-year-old Steven Chase Lafoy, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Investigators reported that Parkerson and Lafoy, who were friends and teammates on the varsity football team, had been involved in a physical altercation concerning a theft. It is believed that as Parkerson attempted to leave in his locked vehicle, Lafoy discharged a rifle, fatally wounding him. Parkerson was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the shooting, Lafoy himself called 911 to report the incident.
Initially, the motive for the shooting was not clear, though police confirmed the two teenagers knew each other. Lafoy was arrested and subsequently faced a capital murder charge. In May 2022, Steven Chase Lafoy pleaded guilty to the charge of felony murder. As a result of his guilty plea, he was sentenced to 25 years in the Alabama Department of Corrections.
