Jeanette Dyer, a 50-year-old woman, was tragically murdered on December 20, 1979, in Martel, Florida. Jeanette, who worked as a clerk at the Little Country Store, was found on the floor with a severe head wound. Despite showing a faint heartbeat upon discovery, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital. The cause of death was determined to be a single bullet wound that penetrated her right eye and brain, fired from approximately one foot away. A sum of money was also reported missing from the store's cash register.
The investigation into Jeanette Dyer's death led to the arrest of Sonny Boy Oats Jr., who was 22 years old at the time. Oats was apprehended after a high-speed chase involving an Ocala policeman who noticed his suspicious behavior near a Jiffy Food Store. During the chase, Oats discarded a weapon, which was later recovered and identified as the same gun used in both the Martel store shooting and a separate robbery and shooting at an ABC liquor store the day before Jeanette's murder. Oats confessed to both crimes, initially claiming the gun discharged accidentally during the Martel robbery.
