Tara Rosado, a 26-year-old woman from Tavernier, FL, was tragically found dead on October 16, 2015, alongside her boyfriend, Carlos Ortiz, in their home on Cuba Road. The couple was discovered by Rosado's three young children, who were present in the house at the time of the murders. Both victims had been shot in the head, and their bodies were found in the bedroom, with blood soaking the floor near children's toys. The investigation revealed that the murders were drug-related. Carlos Ortiz, who was 30 years old at the time of his death, had been involved in drug activities, including a plan to open a tattoo business with Jeremy Macauley, a 33-year-old man from Tavernier. Macauley had come into possession of a large amount of cocaine, which he distributed to Ortiz and another individual, Adrian Demblans. A disagreement between Ortiz and Macauley over the tattoo business led Ortiz to threaten Macauley with exposure of his drug activities to the authorities.
On the night of October 15, 2015, Macauley and Demblans drove to the home on Cuba Road. Macauley entered the residence and, after a brief interaction, shot both Rosado and Ortiz. The gun used in the murders was later recovered from a nearby waterway, and surveillance footage placed Macauley and Demblans at the scene. Text messages and other evidence further implicated Macauley in the crime.
Jeremy Macauley was arrested in March 2016 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He was initially found guilty in 2017 and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, plus an additional 30 years for robbery with a firearm. However, his convictions were overturned in 2020 due to the exclusion of evidence suggesting another individual had confessed to the murders. In a retrial in May 2024, Macauley was once again found guilty and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. Adrian Demblans, who had driven Macauley to the scene, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and was sentenced to ten years in prison, serving eight years before his release in January 2023.
