Carlos Ortiz, a 30-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically murdered on October 15, 2015, in Tavernier, Florida. His body, along with that of his girlfriend, Tara Rosado, a 26-year-old woman, was discovered the following day by a neighbor who noticed Rosado's three young children wandering outside their home. The couple had been shot in the head, with Ortiz's body found on the floor and Rosado's in bed. Autopsy reports revealed that both victims had several drugs in their systems, including marijuana, cocaine, and prescription medications.
The investigation into their deaths revealed that Jeremy Macauley, a fisherman from Key Largo, was responsible for the murders. Macauley had found a large stash of cocaine while working on a fishing boat and had been selling it. Ortiz, who had a history of drug use and criminal activity, was blackmailing Macauley, threatening to report him to the police unless he received cash and drugs. This led Macauley to murder Ortiz and Rosado in their home while Rosado's children were present.
Macauley was initially convicted in 2017 and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus an additional 30 years for robbery with a firearm. However, in 2020, an appellate court reversed the convictions and ordered a new trial, citing the exclusion of evidence that another person had confessed to the murders. In May 2024, Macauley was found guilty again after a retrial and is set to receive two consecutive life sentences.
Adrian Demblans, who had driven Macauley to Ortiz's home on the night of the murders, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and testified against Macauley. Demblans was released in January 2023 after serving eight years of his ten-year sentence.
The case highlights the tragic consequences of drug-related violence and the impact it has on families and communities. Ortiz's and Rosado's deaths left Rosado's three children without their mother, and the community of Tavernier was deeply affected by the brutal nature of the crime.
