Amparo Moreno, a 44-year-old Hispanic woman, tragically lost her life on June 18, 2016, in Lehigh Acres, Florida. The incident occurred outside her home on 9th Street West, where she was involved in a heated argument with her husband, Placido Moreno-Torres. Witnesses reported hearing the couple arguing loudly before gunshots rang out. Ricardo Vaca, a 20-year-old neighbor, heard the commotion and attempted to intervene, but was also shot and killed by Moreno-Torres.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Placido Moreno-Torres, 47, was quickly identified as the shooter and fled the scene on foot. He was later apprehended by authorities and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder. During the trial, it was revealed that Moreno-Torres had struck his wife during the argument, prompting her to call for help. Vaca, who was described as a good Samaritan, tried to mediate the situation but was fatally shot along with Amparo Moreno.
The case proceeded to trial, where Moreno-Torres was found guilty of all charges. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders of his wife and neighbor, and an additional 30 years for the attempted murder charge.
