On April 23, 1987, Ronald Grogan, a 27-year-old white male police officer, was tragically killed in Palm Bay, Florida. Officer Grogan, along with his colleague Officer Gerald Johnson, responded to a mass shooting incident at a local shopping center. The perpetrator, William Bryan Cruse Jr., a 59-year-old retired librarian, had gone on a shooting spree, killing six civilians and wounding 14 others. Cruse was armed with a Ruger Mini-14 semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol.
As Officer Grogan approached the scene in his patrol car, Cruse opened fire, killing him before he could exit his vehicle. Officer Johnson was also shot and killed during the incident.
The mass shooting began when Cruse confronted two boys near his property and subsequently drove to the Palm Bay Shopping Center, where he started shooting at random. He killed several people, including two shoppers and a passerby, before moving to another location across the street. The situation escalated into a hostage crisis at a supermarket, where Cruse continued his rampage. The police officers' arrival led to a deadly confrontation, resulting in the deaths of Officers Grogan and Johnson.
Cruse was apprehended later that night and was subsequently convicted of multiple murders. He was sentenced to death but died of natural causes in prison in 2009 at the age of 82. The incident remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in Brevard County's history and had a profound impact on the Palm Bay community. The bravery and sacrifice of Officers Grogan and Johnson are remembered and honored by the community to this day.
