David Lamar Curtis, a 31-year-old officer with the Tampa Police Department, tragically lost his life on June 29, 2010, during a routine traffic stop. Officer Curtis, along with his colleague Officer Jeffrey Kocab, was attempting to arrest a suspect at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 50th Street. The vehicle they stopped lacked a visible license plate, prompting Officer Curtis to call for backup.
Upon the arrival of Officer Kocab, the officers discovered that the male passenger in the car was wanted on a misdemeanor charge for writing a worthless check. As they attempted to arrest the suspect, he drew a weapon and shot both officers at close range. Officer Curtis was pronounced dead a few hours later, while Officer Kocab succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The suspect in the shooting, who fled the scene, was apprehended four days later. He was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, as it was determined he had committed three other murders in Tampa. The legal proceedings culminated on November 15, 2013, when the suspect was convicted of murdering both officers. The jury recommended the death penalty, and he was formally sentenced to death on May 30, 2014.
