Wilmer Irias, a 41-year-old Honduran man, was tragically killed on August 15, 2014, in Miami, Florida. On that fateful night, Irias was at the Marlins Bar on Southwest 17th Avenue in Little Havana. He stepped out to retrieve something from his car when he was confronted by an armed assailant. The confrontation quickly escalated into a struggle, during which Irias was shot multiple times. Despite his injuries, he managed to stagger back into the bar, where he was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The investigation into Wilmer Irias's death led to the arrest of Jacobo Chigin, a 54-year-old man, on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and tampering with evidence. According to the arrest report, an anonymous source identified Chigin as the suspect. Further evidence came from Chigin's girlfriend, who reported that he had returned home on the night of the shooting, visibly nervous and sweating, with a handgun in his waistband. She recounted that Chigin admitted to her that he had "just did something to a Honduran guy at the Marlins Bar." Chigin later sold the gun for crack cocaine in his neighborhood.
Chigin denied any involvement in the robbery and shooting of Wilmer Irias. However, his criminal history, which included prior arrests for armed robberies and carrying a concealed firearm, added weight to the charges against him. He was ordered to be held without bond as the legal proceedings continued.
The family of Wilmer Irias pleaded with the public for any information that could help bring justice for their loved one.
