A Black male, Guinn was standing outside a Chinese restaurant on Reisterstown Road at approximately 12:35 a.m. when he was fatally shot. His death marked the beginning of a violent three-day span in the city that would see four other young residents also lose their lives to gun violence.
Guinn's journey to that fateful night was one marked by early hardship. At the tender age of eight, he experienced the profound loss of his mother, who succumbed to complications from lupus. This event occurred shortly after he had been reunited with his family after spending time in foster care. Described as a devoted son, he had taken on the role of caregiver for his ailing mother. Her death, however, sent his life on a different trajectory. Two years later, he ran away from home, becoming entangled in the city's street life of gangs and drugs.
By the age of 13, his involvement in this world was starkly illustrated in a low-budget film where he was featured among gang members, holding a firearm. A series of arrests as a teenager led to his placement in juvenile detention facilities. It was during this period of incarceration that he began to reconnect with his siblings. He would send them letters and his report cards, urging his younger brother to avoid the path he had taken. To his older sister, who he viewed as a mother figure, he would reach out on holidays, attempting to maintain a familial bond despite his circumstances.
A year after Kajuan Guinn's murder, his case remained unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. His family, like the families of the other victims from that bloody 72-hour period, were left to navigate their grief without the closure of seeing justice served.
