Christopher Andrew Vandewater, a 28-year-old resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, was tragically shot and killed on November 15, 2015, in Jacksonville, Florida. Vandewater had just been released from the Duval County jail earlier that day after serving a sentence for drug-related charges. He was traveling with a friend on San Pablo Road when they stopped at the intersection of William Davis Parkway.
At this point, a car pulled up beside them, and shots were fired, striking Vandewater in the head. He was rushed to the Mayo Clinic by his friend but succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Vandewater's death revealed a complex web of relationships and motives. Justin Matthew Sowers, a 31-year-old man, was identified as the primary suspect in the case. Sowers was reportedly in a relationship with Michelle Sarah Massey, the mother of Vandewater's five-year-old daughter. Vandewater had visited his daughter earlier that day, which may have triggered the fatal encounter. Sowers, who was already in jail on unrelated drug charges, allegedly bragged to fellow inmates about killing Vandewater, which led to his arrest. He was charged with murder and attempted murder.
Further investigations uncovered that Sowers had a history of animosity towards Vandewater, partly due to his relationship with Massey. Sowers believed that Vandewater had set him up for an arrest in Texas, adding to the tension between them. On the night of the shooting, Sowers had access to a black vehicle, and cellphone records placed him in the vicinity of the crime scene. The police also found a 9mm Beretta handgun, along with cocaine, heroin, and pills, during a raid at the house where Sowers and Massey lived.
The case against Sowers was bolstered by the testimonies of inmates who reported his confessions and the physical evidence linking him to the crime. Massey, who was also arrested on drug-trafficking charges, expressed her grief over Vandewater's death in a Facebook post, calling for an end to unnecessary violence. The legal proceedings against Sowers and Massey highlighted the tragic consequences of their actions and the impact on Vandewater's family, particularly his young daughter.
