Andrea Lorraine Dixon, a 39-year-old certified nursing assistant from Lakeland, Florida, tragically lost her life in a drive-by shooting on October 15, 2016. The incident occurred around 2:16 a.m. in the parking lot of a Chevron gas station on West Memorial Boulevard. Dixon was found with a gunshot wound to her chest and was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later. Ragins, who sustained gunshot wounds to her torso and right elbow.
The events leading to the shooting began earlier that night at Rumors Night Club on East Memorial Boulevard. A confrontation between two rival groups escalated in the club's parking lot as it was closing. The groups were dispersed by Lakeland Police Department officers, but they reconvened at the nearby gas station. Derrick Deon Robinson, a member of one of the groups, drove to the gas station armed with a handgun and opened fire on the crowd, hitting Dixon and Ragins. Witnesses identified Robinson as the shooter, and he was later apprehended after turning himself in to the authorities.
Robinson, who had a criminal history including convictions for burglary, aggravated assault, and dealing in stolen property, was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. During the trial, multiple witnesses testified against Robinson, and he was found guilty of all charges. Circuit Judge Jalal Harb sentenced Robinson to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as the state did not seek the death penalty.
