Wendy Rene Bellar, a 31-year-old woman from Lakeland, Florida, tragically lost her life on May 3, 2009, in a horrific incident that shocked the community. Wendy, along with her two young sons, 7-year-old Ryan Patrick and 5-month-old Zack James, was shot and killed by her husband, Troy Ryan Bellar, who then took his own life. The couple's 13-year-old son, Nathan, managed to escape the violence and survived the ordeal.
The incident occurred late on a Sunday night at their home in the
Creekbend subdivision of Lakeland. According to reports, an argument had erupted between Wendy and Troy, leading Wendy to attempt to leave the house with her children. However, Troy, armed with a .308 caliber hunting rifle, opened fire, killing Wendy and their two youngest sons on the front porch of their home. He then chased Nathan through the garage, firing multiple shots, but Nathan managed to escape to a neighbor's house.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office described the event as one of the worst shooting rampages in the county's history. Sheriff Grady Judd expressed his horror at the crime, stating that it was too early to determine what exactly sparked the violence. However, it was noted that there had been previous domestic issues in the household. Wendy had been arrested in March of the same year on a domestic battery charge after an altercation with Troy, during which she reportedly hit him with a pair of jeans and grabbed a kitchen knife.
Neighbors described Troy as a seemingly nice man who ran a home remodeling business, while Wendy was a stay-at-home mother. Despite the outward appearance of normalcy, the family had experienced significant turmoil. The investigation revealed that Troy had been diagnosed with depression, and there were concerns about Wendy's mental health as well.
The surviving son, Nathan, was placed with his grandparents following the incident. The community was left reeling from the tragedy, struggling to comprehend the senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of Wendy and her two young children.
