On February 13, 2017, 15-year-old Shanice Smith and her mother, Karen Lyle, were tragically found dead in their townhouse in Sunrise, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The incident was a result of a double shooting carried out by Kevin Nelson, Karen Lyle's husband and Shanice's stepfather.
