Isaiah Hyndman, a 21-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on March 29, 2017, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred at the Caribbean Villas apartment complex, where Isaiah and his friends were playing video games. Isaiah, along with 21-year-old Cortney Lowery Jr. and 23-year-old Abiade Granger, were in the apartment when the shooting took place. Isaiah was shot multiple times, including in the head, chest, and thigh, and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Cortney Lowery Jr. also succumbed to his injuries, while Abiade Granger survived despite being shot eleven times.
The perpetrator, Kenneth Gessesse Hawthorne, a 22-year-old resident of the same apartment complex, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The motive behind the shooting was linked to a disagreement over a video game. Hawthorne, who was friends with the victims, reportedly left the room after switching the game and returned with a firearm, opening fire on his friends without warning.
The case proceeded to trial, where Hawthorne was found guilty of the charges. The jury convicted him of two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and one count of attempted murder with a firearm. In May 2023, Hawthorne was sentenced to two life sentences for the murders of Isaiah Hyndman and Cortney Lowery Jr., along with a 25-year sentence for the attempted murder of Abiade Granger.
Throughout the trial, the defense argued that there was no premeditation or evidence of a planned attack, suggesting that the shooting was a result of an untreated mental issue. However, the prosecution successfully demonstrated the severity and intentionality of the crime, leading to Hawthorne's conviction and sentencing.
