Elian R. Hughes, a 17-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 31, 2017, in Leesburg, Florida. The incident occurred near the Laurel Oaks Apartments on Sleepy Hollow Road around 5 p.m. Elian was shot once in the hand and once in the abdomen. A bystander found him and was directed to take him to a nearby Lowe's on U.S. 441, where he was then airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Despite undergoing surgery, Elian succumbed to his injuries.
