Lazaro Orgaz Pineiro, a 67-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on December 8, 2018, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred in the Royal Palm Estates neighborhood, just west of Palm Beach International Airport. According to reports, Pineiro was involved in a dispute over parking issues with 28-year-old Johnathan Ramon Vela, also of West Palm Beach. The argument escalated, leading Vela to retrieve a .380-caliber handgun and fatally shoot Pineiro in the side of the head.
Pineiro was transported to Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the incident, Vela was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm. He was already in custody on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon without a license when he was re-booked for the murder charge. Vela's arrest report indicated that he lived at the same address as Pineiro, though it did not specify if they were related or roommates. During his bond appearance, Vela was ordered held without bail and informed that he would be turned over to immigration officials if released, as he is a native of Mexico.
The investigation revealed that Vela claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Pineiro had pointed a gun at him and that Pineiro's son, Joel Mesa, had chased him with a knife. However, witnesses reported that neither Pineiro nor Mesa were armed at the time of the shooting. Vela was found intoxicated and wearing bloodstained clothes in the back seat of a vehicle shortly after the incident, with the murder weapon discovered under a seat inside the vehicle.
This tragic event marked the 100th confirmed homicide in Palm Beach County for the year 2018, highlighting ongoing concerns about gun violence in the area.
