On January 17, 2019, 31-year-old Jose Otero, a security guard at the Booby Trap strip club in northwest Miami-Dade County, was fatally shot following an altercation inside the establishment. The incident began when a brawl erupted among patrons, prompting security personnel, including Otero and his colleague Eric Bauer, 46, to intervene and escort the involved individuals outside.
Shortly after their removal, a vehicle approached the club, and an assailant exited, opening fire with a rifle at the entrance where Otero and Bauer were stationed. Otero sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene, while Bauer suffered a gunshot wound to his hand and managed to drive himself to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement initiated an extensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. In February 2019, authorities arrested Anthony Rodriguez, 25, alleging he served as the getaway driver during the incident. The following month, James Lemons, 29, was also taken into custody and charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder with a weapon. Both individuals were believed to have been involved in the initial altercation that led to the shooting.
Despite these arrests, the individual who allegedly fired the fatal shots remained at large for several years. The breakthrough came in April 2023, when authorities apprehended 33-year-old Semaj Lavarinton Charles, charging him with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to court documents, Lemons had entered a plea deal in 2022, during which he identified Charles as the gunman and Rodriguez as the driver. Charles was accused of returning to the club armed with an AK-47 rifle and discharging 26 rounds, resulting in Otero's death and Bauer's injury.
The arrests of Rodriguez, Lemons, and Charles marked significant developments in the case, bringing a measure of closure to the tragic event that claimed the life of Jose Otero. The legal proceedings against the accused individuals underscored the efforts of law enforcement to ensure accountability for the violence that transpired that January morning.
