Jayden James Piedra, a 2-year-old boy from Jacksonville, Florida, tragically died on February 8, 2019. The incident occurred at the Morningside Apartments on Jammes Road, where Jayden was staying with his mother, Donna Crump-Piedra, and her boyfriend, Lephabion Griggs. On the morning of the incident, Jayden and his 7-year-old brother found a loaded gun that had been left unsecured on a table. While playing with the firearm, Jayden accidentally shot himself.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries about nine hours later.
The investigation revealed that both Crump-Piedra and Griggs were asleep on a couch when the shooting occurred. The gun, which was later found to be stolen, had been left out in the open, easily accessible to the children. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office determined that the shooting was a tragic accident, but one that could have been entirely prevented if the firearm had been properly secured.
Following the incident, both Donna Crump-Piedra and Lephabion Griggs were arrested. Crump-Piedra faced charges of child neglect and culpable negligence involving a firearm. She eventually pleaded guilty to these charges and was sentenced to seven years in prison, followed by three years of probation. The court also mandated that she take additional parenting classes. During her sentencing, Crump-Piedra expressed deep remorse for the loss of her son, describing him as her best friend and everything to her.
Lephabion Griggs was also charged with culpable negligence and improper storage of a firearm, as well as violation of probation. He was held on a $50,000 bail. The investigation into how Griggs came into possession of the stolen firearm was ongoing at the time of the arrests. The case highlighted the importance of gun safety and the legal responsibilities of gun owners to secure their firearms, especially in homes with children.
