Zhane Sanders, a 16-year-old girl from North Carolina, tragically lost her life on June 5, 2022, in Gainesville, Florida. She was visiting family in the area for a high school graduation celebration when she became an innocent victim of a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred at approximately 2:17 a.m. at the Palms of Archer, a mobile home park located off Southwest Archer Road.
Deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting and discovered Sanders, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Sanders' death led to the identification and arrest of two suspects, Geremy Navarro and Nathaniel Kendrick. Both men have been charged with first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the drive-by shooting. Navarro, 22, and Kendrick, 25, were apprehended and are currently being held at the Marion County Jail. The Alachua County Sheriff's Office, along with partner agencies, worked diligently to bring justice for Sanders and her family. Sheriff Emery Gainey commended the detectives and partner agencies for their continuous pursuit of justice.
Further details revealed that Navarro was already serving a life sentence for a separate murder conviction. He was found guilty of the January 2022 murder of Ferron Marquise Williams in Ocala and was sentenced to life in prison on November 22, 2023. The drive-by shooting that claimed Sanders' life appears to have been a random act of violence, with Sanders being an unintended target. The case remains under investigation, and additional charges or suspects may emerge as the legal proceedings continue.
