Dumuta Szerika, a 49-year-old woman from Miami, Florida, tragically lost her life on August 31, 2022, in what has been identified as a murder-suicide. The incident occurred on a Brickell sidewalk, where Szerika was found dead alongside Coclea Gheorghe Cristian, a 48-year-old man. Both individuals were Romanian citizens who had been residing in Pennsylvania and were in a romantic relationship for about two years.
Szerika had traveled to Miami with her 14-year-old son to stay with her 27-year-old daughter, attempting to distance herself from Cristian. However, Cristian followed them to Miami in an effort to rekindle their relationship. When Szerika refused his advances, Cristian shot her and then turned the gun on himself. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Miami Police Department responded to calls of a shooting around 9:20 p.m. near 145 Southwest 12th Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of Szerika and Cristian on the sidewalk. The investigation revealed that Szerika had been trying to escape from Cristian, who had followed her from Pennsylvania. Despite the tragic outcome, there was no prior history of domestic violence reported between the two, although detectives continued to investigate their background and history. The shooting occurred in front of Szerika's two children, adding to the trauma of the event.
