On July 9, 2024, 11-year-old Taliyah Clarke was fatally shot inside her apartment in the area of Northwest 2nd Avenue and Northwest 17th Street in Overtown, Miami. The incident occurred around noon when Taliyah was in her room with her 9-year-old brother. Her father, Titato Hatzate Clarke, and her grandmother, Charlene Ann Webster, reported hearing a loud "pop" coming from the room. Upon entering, they found Taliyah suffering from a gunshot wound to her chest. She was immediately transported to Holtz Children’s Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery but was pronounced dead at 1:09 p.m.

The investigation led to the arrest of three family members: Taliyah's father, Titato Hatzate Clarke; her grandmother, Charlene Ann Webster; and Titato Clarke's partner, Nancy Severe. All three were charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child under 18. The arrests were made due to inconsistent statements provided by the adults about the shooting. Titato Clarke, who has a history of 12 felony convictions, gave multiple conflicting accounts of the event. The other two adults also provided inconsistent stories, which complicated the investigation.

During the investigation, detectives found a Glock handgun wrapped in a pink scarf and brown blanket in the children’s bedroom, along with a spent casing and large pools of blood. Despite this evidence, the prosecution faced significant challenges due to the lack of cooperation from witnesses and the inability to determine who owned the firearm. As a result, the Miami-Dade state attorneys dropped all manslaughter charges against the three family members due to insufficient evidence.

The case highlighted the tragic consequences of accidental shootings involving children. Taliyah's mother, Chantrell Manning, emphasized the importance of keeping guns safe and away from children to prevent such tragedies. The community and family members were deeply affected by the loss, and a GoFundMe page was set up to support Taliyah's memorial services.

The investigation ultimately concluded without any of the family members being held accountable due to the lack of sufficient evidence and witness cooperation. The case remains a poignant example of the devastating impact of gun-related incidents on families and communities.
