Sha'Dayla Ann Johnson, a 23-year-old resident of Melbourne, Florida, tragically lost her life on December 20, 2022. On that fateful morning, Melbourne Police responded to a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim at 2827 Colbert Circle. Upon arrival, officers found Johnson unresponsive in the carport of her home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite being transported to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter.
The investigation quickly identified Carlos Jones II, Johnson's former live-in boyfriend, as the primary suspect. Witnesses reported seeing Jones at the residence around the time of the shooting. Later that morning, Jones surrendered to the Palm Bay Police Department and confessed to the crime. He admitted to shooting Johnson following a dispute over her not responding to his phone calls or text messages.
Jones was initially indicted for first-degree murder on January 17, 2023. However, during the trial, the jury convicted him of the lesser charge of second-degree murder while discharging a firearm causing death. On December 8, 2023, Circuit Judge Steve Henderson sentenced Jones to life in prison. The sentencing followed a contested hearing where Assistant State Attorneys Nader Hatoum and Kari Kies successfully argued for a life sentence, despite the defense's request for a 25-year minimum mandatory sentence.
