Kate Morgan, also known as Lottie, checked into the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California, on November 24, 1892, under the alias "Mrs. Lottie A. Bernard" from Detroit. She was described by the hotel staff as a beautiful, well-dressed, but melancholic woman. Over the next few days, she appeared increasingly troubled and was seen purchasing a handgun in the city.
