On March 23, 1957, eight-year-old Tommy Bowman vanished while on a brief hike in the Arroyo Seco area near Pasadena, California. Tommy was visiting family in Altadena and had run ahead of his cousins, eager to reach the car first. However, he disappeared without a trace, prompting a massive search effort involving police, residents, and even helicopters.
Despite these efforts, no sign of Tommy was found, and the case went cold for decades.
Years later, Pasadena author Weston DeWalt became intrigued by Tommy's disappearance and began an extensive investigation. DeWalt's research led him to believe that Tommy had been abducted and murdered by Mack Ray Edwards, a known serial killer who confessed to killing six children between 1953 and 1968. Edwards, who committed suicide in 1971 while on death row, is now considered a suspect in Tommy's case and several other unsolved child disappearances in Southern California. Detective Vivian Flores of the Los Angeles Police Department's Cold Case Homicide Unit supports DeWalt's theory, stating that she believes Edwards is responsible for Tommy's disappearance.
Edwards' criminal history includes the abduction and murder of several children, such as Stella Darlene Nolan, Donald Baker, Brenda Howell, Gary Rocha, Roger Madison, and Donald Allen Todd. His confessions and the circumstances of these cases suggest a pattern of targeting young children, often abducting them from public places and disposing of their bodies in remote areas. Despite Edwards' death, law enforcement continues to investigate his possible involvement in other cold cases, hoping to bring closure to the families of the victims.
