James E. Pence Jr., a 24-year-old officer with the California Highway Patrol (CHP), tragically lost his life on April 6, 1970, in what has since been termed the "Newhall Incident." This event marked one of the darkest days in CHP history, as it resulted in the deaths of four young officers in a brief but intense gun battle.
