On August 26, 2024, Rice University junior Andrea Rodriguez Avila, 21, was found deceased in her dorm room at Jones College in Houston, Texas. The discovery was made by campus police conducting a welfare check after her family expressed concern over her unresponsiveness. Avila, a pre-law political science major who had transferred to Rice from a community college in Maryland, was known for her ambition and role as a peer academic advisor at Jones College.
