Superior Court Judge Harold Joseph Haley, aged 66, tragically lost his life on August 7, 1970, in San Rafael, California, during a violent incident at the Marin County Civic Center. Judge Haley was taken hostage in his courtroom by Jonathan Jackson, a 17-year-old who aimed to free the Soledad Brothers, including his older brother George Jackson. Jonathan Jackson entered the courtroom armed and freed San Quentin inmate James McClain, who was on trial, along with two other inmates, Ruchell Magee
and William Christmas. The group took Judge Haley, Deputy District Attorney Gary Thomas, and three female jurors hostage in a desperate escape attempt.
The situation escalated as the captors attempted to flee the courthouse with their hostages. During the escape attempt, a shootout ensued between the abductors and law enforcement officers. Judge Haley was killed in the crossfire, struck by a shotgun blast to the face from a sawed-off shotgun that had been taped to his neck by the captors. Additionally, he was hit in the chest by a bullet from a .357 magnum taken from a deputy. The shootout also resulted in the deaths of Jonathan Jackson, James McClain, and William Christmas. Deputy District Attorney Gary Thomas was critically wounded and left paralyzed, while one of the female hostages was also injured.

Angela Davis, a prominent activist, was implicated in the case as she was accused of purchasing the firearms used in the hostage-taking. Davis faced charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder, but was eventually acquitted of all charges in a high-profile trial.
