Erick Boliver Mendez Vasquez, a 33-year-old resident of San Rafael, California, tragically lost his life on June 4, 2022. The incident occurred in the Canal neighborhood, a location known for its vibrant community but also occasional gang-related activities. On the night of his death, Mendez Vasquez was among a group of people drinking near the corner of Mill Street and Medway Road.
The group was suddenly attacked by suspected gang members in what appeared to be a retaliatory strike for an earlier altercation. Mendez Vasquez, who was not believed to be involved in any gang activities, was fatally shot during this attack. He was transported to a hospital by San Rafael firefighters but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Mendez Vasquez's death led to the arrest of several individuals. Alan Esturado Aceitu Perez, a 23-year-old resident of Novato, was identified as the primary suspect. Perez was linked to the crime through surveillance footage, witness testimonies, and forensic evidence, including a firearm that matched the weapon used in the shooting. The gun was recovered by police while responding to a report of gang graffiti. Perez was seen in social media photographs with a firearm that matched the one used in the crime, further solidifying his connection to the murder.
Perez was arrested and held at the Marin County Jail. He eventually pleaded guilty to the murder of Erick Boliver Mendez Vasquez in September 2024, just before his trial was set to begin. As part of his plea deal, the prosecution dismissed additional charges related to firearm and ammunition possession. On January 23, 2025, Perez was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. During the sentencing, the judge acknowledged the severe and permanent consequences of Perez's actions and expressed hope that Perez would reflect on his crime.
In addition to Perez, six other individuals were arrested and convicted for their roles in the attack. These convictions included charges of assault, unlawfully carrying concealed firearms, and vandalism. The coordinated efforts of the San Rafael police and other law enforcement agencies were instrumental in bringing these individuals to justice and providing some measure of closure to the family and friends of Erick Boliver Mendez Vasquez.
