Jeannie Gustafson Mills, born Deanna Mertle, was a prominent defector from the Peoples Temple, a cult led by Jim Jones. She, along with her husband Al Mills and their children, left the Temple in 1974 after witnessing and experiencing severe abuses. The family legally changed their names to distance themselves from the cult. Jeannie became an outspoken critic of the Peoples Temple, co-founding the Concerned Relatives of Peoples Temple Members organization and the Berkeley Human Freedom Center,
which provided support for other defectors. Her activism played a significant role in exposing the abuses within the Temple and ultimately led to the fact-finding mission by U.S. Representative Leo Ryan to Jonestown, Guyana, which ended in tragedy with Ryan's murder and the mass murder-suicide of over 900 Temple members in 1978.
On February 26, 1980, Jeannie Mills, her husband Al, and their 15-year-old daughter Daphene were found murdered in their home in Berkeley, California. They were shot execution-style, with Jeannie and Al dying instantly and Daphene succumbing to her injuries two days later. The initial investigation considered various motives, including the possibility of retribution by former Temple members, but no substantial evidence supported this theory. The case went cold for many years, with no arrests made despite the presence of gunshot residue on the hands of their 17-year-old son, Eddie Mills, who was home at the time but unharmed.
In 2005, the Berkeley Police Department reopened the investigation, leading to the arrest of Eddie Mills at San Francisco International Airport. He was detained on three counts of murder, but the Alameda County District Attorney's Office ultimately declined to file charges due to insufficient evidence. Eddie Mills, who had been living in Japan, returned there after his release. The murders of Jeannie, Al, and Daphene Mills remain officially unsolved, with no definitive answers as to who was responsible or why they were killed. The case continues to be a haunting reminder of the dark legacy of the Peoples Temple and the tragic consequences faced by those who dared to speak out against it.
