Sereinat’e Henderson, a 19-year-old resident of Berkeley, California, tragically lost her life on the evening of October 21, 2020. Henderson was driving through the intersection of Prince and Ellis Streets with her family, including her 1-year-old son, when their vehicle was targeted in a drive-by shooting. The car was struck by multiple bullets, and Henderson was critically injured. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
At the time of her death, Henderson was two months pregnant with her second child, adding another layer of tragedy to the incident.
The investigation into Henderson's death was extensive and involved multiple search warrants and collaboration with the District Attorney's Office. After months of gathering electronic and forensic evidence, detectives identified a suspect. On January 24, 2022, a 21-year-old man was arrested in connection with Henderson's murder. At the time of his arrest, the suspect was already in custody at Santa Rita Jail for a separate gang-related shooting in Berkeley. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged him with multiple felonies, including murder, attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon. The charges also included several criminal enhancements.
The case saw a significant development in January 2024 when the suspect, Charles Jones, accepted a plea deal. Jones, who was 23 at the time, agreed to a manslaughter charge with an enhancement for the personal use of a firearm. This plea deal resulted in a 21-year prison sentence, with the possibility of serving 85% of the sentence, along with credit for time served. The plea deal was met with mixed reactions from Henderson's family, who felt that the sentence was not sufficient given the gravity of the crime. Henderson's mother, Salima Wyrick, expressed her grief and frustration, noting that the loss of her daughter and unborn grandchild had left a lasting impact on their family.
