On May 13, 1982, Riverside police officers Philip N. Trust and Dennis C. Doty were tragically killed in the line of duty. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when the officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Jackson Chambers Daniels Jr., a convicted bank robbery suspect who had failed to report to begin serving a 13-year sentence. Daniels had been convicted of a 1980 bank robbery in Riverside, which involved a high-speed chase and a shootout with police officers.
During the shootout, Daniels was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down. Despite his condition, Daniels had been out on bail pending the outcome of an appeal for his conviction.
On the day of the incident, Officers Trust and Doty, both working in plain clothes and assigned to the warrant detail, responded to an address on Wolfe Street in Riverside based on recent information that Daniels was at that location. Upon arrival, a gun battle ensued, resulting in the deaths of both officers. Daniels, despite being wounded, managed to escape and remained at large for approximately 60 hours before being arrested in Rubidoux, California, by Riverside police officers.
Philip N. Trust, aged 36, was a 10-year veteran of the Riverside Police Department. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda, and their four children. Dennis C. Doty, aged 35, was also a 10-year veteran of the department and is survived by his parents and two sisters. Both officers were remembered for their dedication and service to the community.
Jackson Chambers Daniels Jr. was initially convicted of the murders in 1983 and sentenced to death. However, his conviction and sentence were overturned by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals due to ineffective and inexperienced counsel. In 2009, Daniels was retried, convicted again, and sentenced to death in 2010. Daniels remained on death row until his death in state prison on August 16, 2024, at the age of 86. He was receiving hospice care at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville at the time of his death.
The deaths of Officers Trust and Doty had a profound impact on the Riverside community. They are commemorated at the Safe in His Arms memorial in downtown Riverside, which honors Riverside County law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. Additionally, the Doty Trust Park, a 21-acre park in the La Sierra neighborhood, was opened in 2012 as a lasting tribute to the fallen officers. The park includes memorial plaques and words etched in concrete that describe the character of the officers, ensuring their legacy lives on.
