On December 2, 1993, Richard Bateman, aged 65, was tragically killed in a shooting spree at the California Employment Development Department office in Oxnard, California. Bateman, who was visiting the office on behalf of a nonprofit organization that assisted disabled adults in finding employment, was one of three victims shot by Alan Douglas Winterbourne, a chronically unemployed man from Ventura.
