Deputy Sheriff Michael Lee Hoenig, aged 32, tragically lost his life on October 30, 1997, in South Gate, California. Deputy Hoenig was on duty, patrolling alone in his car, when he encountered a man acting erratically on a bicycle. At approximately 1:15 a.m., Deputy Hoenig stopped the man on the 3000 block of Seminole Avenue.
