Christian Chavez Avelar, a 40-year-old Latino man, died on November 27, 2017, in South Gate, California. His death occurred during a standoff with police officers. The incident began the previous day when Avelar assaulted his live-in girlfriend with a handgun, causing her to be hospitalized. Following the assault, Avelar fled the scene, prompting South Gate Police to obtain a warrant for his arrest.
