On the evening of November 30, 2023, 15-year-old Daniel Julian Mejia was tragically shot and killed in South Gate, California. Daniel was walking with another individual when an unknown assailant approached them and inquired about their gang affiliation by asking, "Where are you from?"
When Daniel did not respond, the assailant drew a firearm and shot him once in the chest, with the bullet striking his heart. Daniel was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m.
Daniel was a beloved teenager, known for his joyful spirit and kindness toward family and friends. His mother, Elisa Martinez, emphasized that her son was not involved in any gang activities. A makeshift memorial has been established at the scene of the shooting, and a GoFundMe page was created to assist the family during this difficult time.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Daniel's death. The South Gate Police Department is actively investigating the case and has urged anyone with information to come forward. Detectives are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspect to bring justice for Daniel and his grieving family.
A graveside service for Daniel was held on December 23, 2023, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California, where he was laid to rest.
