Matthew Rodrigo Flores, a 10-year-old boy from Pico Rivera, California, tragically lost his life on July 21, 2000. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when Matthew, along with his father Richard, his brother Richard Jr., and his sister Sylvia, were brutally murdered in their home. The family was attacked while they slept, and the crime was orchestrated by Michael Naranjo, then 17, and his girlfriend Monica Diaz, who was 16 at the time. Monica was an adopted member of the Flores family, taken in by Richard and Sylvia Flores out of compassion due to her difficult family circumstances.
The motive behind the murders was rooted in a misguided belief by Monica and Michael that staging a fake robbery would somehow bring the family closer together. However, this plan escalated into a horrific act of violence. Michael Naranjo carried out most of the stabbing, but Monica's involvement was deemed equal to his. The attack left Sylvia Flores, the mother, severely injured with 15 stab wounds and a slashed throat, but she miraculously survived. The only other survivors were Monica's half-sister, Laura Reta, and the eldest Flores daughter, Esperanza, who were both 18 and shared a bedroom.
Following the murders, both Michael Naranjo and Monica Diaz were arrested and charged. Michael pleaded guilty to the murders in October 2003 and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Monica Diaz was convicted in February 2004 of first-degree murder and received a 100-year-to-life prison sentence. Her sentence was later upheld by a state appeals court in 2011, despite her claims that the punishment was cruel and unusual given her age and lack of prior criminal record.
The case left a lasting impact on the community of Pico Rivera, with many residents expressing their shock and grief over the brutal nature of the crime. The Flores family was well-regarded in the community, and the loss of Richard and his children was deeply felt. Memorial services were held to honor the victims, and the surviving members of the family, particularly Sylvia Flores, faced a long and painful journey of recovery and coping with the loss of their loved ones.
