Crystal Theobald, a 24-year-old woman from Riverside, California, tragically lost her life on February 24, 2006, as a result of gang violence. On that fateful evening, Crystal was in a car with her boyfriend, Juan Patlan, and her brother, Justin Theobald. As they drove through an intersection, their vehicle was ambushed by gunfire from a white SUV. Crystal was struck in the head, while Juan was hit in the stomach.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Crystal succumbed to her injuries two days later. Her mother, Belinda Lane, witnessed the shooting from another car and immediately began her own investigation to find her daughter's killers.
Belinda's relentless pursuit of justice led her to use MySpace, a popular social networking site at the time, to gather information about the suspects. She created fake profiles to befriend members of the 5150 gang, which she believed was responsible for the shooting. Through these efforts, she managed to connect with William "Jokes" Sotelo, a gang member who provided crucial information to the police. This breakthrough led to the identification and arrest of several individuals involved in the crime.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was a case of mistaken identity, with the gang members believing that Crystal, Juan, and Justin were members of a rival gang. William Sotelo, who was 17 at the time of the murder, fled to Mexico but was eventually apprehended and extradited to the United States in 2016. He was the last of eight defendants to be convicted in connection with Crystal's death. Sotelo pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 22 years in prison. Other gang members, including Julio Caesar Heredia, were also convicted and received various prison sentences, with Heredia being sentenced to life without parole for his role in the shooting.
