On the night of March 31, 2023, 21-year-old Isabella Ruiz was fatally shot at a residence in the 18000 block of Gentian Avenue in Woodcrest, an unincorporated area near Riverside, California. Deputies from the Lake Matthews Sheriff's Station responded to a call at approximately 11:51 p.m. and found Ruiz suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where she was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.
The investigation revealed that earlier that day, 21-year-old Brady Matthew Castillo had been at the same residence, where he found a semiautomatic handgun in a drawer and took selfies with it before leaving. Later that evening, Castillo returned to the residence and was in a bedroom with Ruiz and another friend. He noticed the same firearm on a table, picked it up, racked the slide, and, assuming it was unloaded, pointed it at Ruiz's face. After a few seconds, he pulled the trigger, fatally shooting her.
Castillo was arrested on April 1, 2023, on suspicion of manslaughter and was released after posting an $80,000 bond. However, his bail was revoked three months later when he failed to appear in court. In June 2024, Castillo pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and a sentence-enhancing gun use allegation. On November 22, 2024, he was sentenced to six years of formal probation and 364 days in custody, with credit for 348 days already served. The remaining 16 days were to be served in a Riverside County Sheriff's Work Release Program. Additionally, Castillo was ordered to complete 80 hours of community service by December 22, 2025.
The tragic incident underscores the dangers of handling firearms without proper training and the fatal consequences that can result from negligent behavior. Ruiz's death had a profound impact on her community, with friends and family mourning the loss of a young woman remembered for her strong work ethic and vibrant spirit.
