Walter Dewayne Dani, a 24-year-old resident of Gerber, California, tragically lost his life on July 9, 2014, in a shooting incident that occurred in front of the Crossroads Market, located at the intersection of Gyle Road and State Route 99 West in southern Tehama County. On the night of the incident, Tehama County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of shots fired at approximately 10:50 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Dani with a gunshot wound to his head.
Despite their efforts, Dani was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Dani's death quickly led to the identification and arrest of three suspects, all 19 years old and from Corning, California. The first suspect, Poly Duenas Sanchez, was apprehended the following morning and booked on an open count of murder. Shortly thereafter, Lucio Madera was arrested on July 12 and also charged with murder. The third suspect, Gabino Madera, was identified and a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Law enforcement officials recovered the firearm, a shotgun, and the vehicle used in the crime.
The legal proceedings for the three suspects were marked by delays as defense attorneys awaited evidence from the District Attorney's Office. Despite these delays, all three suspects eventually entered not guilty pleas in Tehama County Superior Court.
