Ariana Zendejas, a 19-year-old from Hollister, California, tragically lost her life on August 1, 2014, in a shooting incident. The events unfolded when Jose Antonio Barajas, who had a prior feud with another individual, engaged in a high-speed chase through the streets of Hollister. Barajas, a passenger in a vehicle, pursued another car that had four occupants, including Zendejas, who was seated in the back seat. During the chase, Barajas leaned out of his vehicle and fired a handgun at the car he was pursuing. One of the bullets struck Zendejas, leading to her death later that evening at Hazel Hawkins Hospital.
Following the shooting, Barajas fled the scene and eventually left the country, evading capture for several years. It wasn't until July 12, 2018, that Barajas was apprehended in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was subsequently extradited to the United States and faced trial for his actions. The legal proceedings were complex, involving a retrial after the first trial resulted in a hung jury on several counts. Ultimately, in January 2022, Barajas was found guilty of premeditated, willful, and deliberate murder, as well as attempted murder and kidnapping, with special enhancements for the use of a firearm.
The sentencing took place in April 2022, where Barajas received a combined prison term of 47 years to life.
