Robert Paul Burdge, aged 36, died on March 19, 2015, in Bakersfield, California, following a series of violent events that culminated in a police standoff. The incident began on the evening of March 18, 2015, when Burdge allegedly shot a man during a confrontation at a residence on Copa Cabana Court in northwest Bakersfield. The victim, who was a current employee of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), managed to barricade himself inside the house after being
shot. Burdge, a former CDCR employee, fled the scene, prompting a police search.
The following morning, Burdge was located by the California Highway Patrol at the Vagabond Inn near Stockdale Highway and Interstate 5. A standoff ensued, during which Burdge was found in the motel lobby with a clerk. The clerk was able to leave safely, but communication with Burdge was lost shortly thereafter. SWAT officers then shot Burdge, who was armed, to end the standoff. He was transported to Kern Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
