On January 7, 2024, at approximately 8:50 p.m., the Kern County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Eucalyptus Drive and Sterling Road in east Bakersfield. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 21-year-old Jacob Camarena suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, Camarena was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Kern County Coroner's Office confirmed Camarena's identity.
A GoFundMe campaign was established by his family to assist with funeral expenses, highlighting that Jacob was "just 21 years old, barely getting his life together and beginning to experience independency."
Prior to his death, Camarena had multiple encounters with law enforcement. On September 24, 2023, he was arrested by the Bakersfield Police Department on several charges, including assault with a firearm on a person, robbery, carrying a concealed firearm upon a person, carrying a loaded firearm when not the registered owner, and drawing/exhibiting a firearm.
As of now, authorities have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects in connection with Camarena's death. The investigation remains active, and the Kern County Sheriff's Office has urged anyone with information to come forward.
