Kevin Clay Thomas, a 20-year-old man from Los Angeles, was tragically shot and killed on August 8, 2015. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. at the Soto Gold Line station near 1st and Soto streets. According to reports, Thomas and his friend were approached by three Latino men in their 20s. An argument ensued, and Thomas and his friend were cornered near the elevators. One of the assailants then pulled out a gun and shot Thomas multiple times.
The attackers briefly chased Thomas' friend, who managed to escape, before fleeing west on 1st Street. Thomas was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:41 p.m.
The area around the train station is known for gang activity, and the shooting was initially believed to be gang-related. However, further investigation revealed that it was an attempted robbery gone wrong. Thomas was not involved in any gang activities, and the assailants shot him when he refused to hand over his belongings. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau is handling the investigation, but as of now, no suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the case. The authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, offering anonymity through Crime Stoppers.
