Juan Antonio Bartolo, aged 45, was tragically killed on October 23, 2015, in Riverside, California. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. near Kansas Avenue and Seventh Street. Bartolo, along with Domingo Esteban, 26, and another individual, was walking when two men exited a vehicle and opened fire on them. Bartolo was pronounced dead at the scene, while Esteban succumbed to his injuries at the hospital the following day. The third victim survived the attack.

Antoine Deshawn James, 39, of Bakersfield, and Abiance Linece Turner, 25, of San Diego, were arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and special-circumstance allegations, including committing a murder for the benefit of a criminal street gang. A third suspect, Anthony Lovell Eddington II, was fatally shot by law enforcement during an attempted arrest. The suspects were believed to be affiliated with a gang and the attack was described as racially motivated and random.

The prosecution argued that the suspects were looking to shoot people randomly that night, and the victims were unfortunate to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
