On October 28, 2023, Michael Rangel, a 68-year-old Army veteran and grandfather, was tragically shot and killed while watering his front lawn in Riverside, California. The incident occurred in broad daylight, leaving the community and his family in shock and mourning.
In the weeks following the shooting, Riverside Police Department detectives identified and arrested two suspects in connection with Rangel's death.
Gabriel Molina, 29, was arrested on murder charges, while his alleged accomplice, 28-year-old Mark Anthony Valdez, was charged with accessory to murder. Molina, a convicted felon, was out on bail at the time of the shooting, having previously been arrested for a series of armed robberies targeting fast-food restaurants in Riverside and Moreno Valley between June and December 2022. Additionally, Molina had led police on a high-speed pursuit in October 2023, resulting in a crash and his hospitalization. He managed to leave the hospital before being taken into custody, remaining at large until his arrest for Rangel's murder.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigators have not determined why Rangel was targeted. His family continues to seek answers and justice for their beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Rangel was remembered as a devout family man who cherished his loved ones and his faith. He is survived by his wife, Mary, their four children, and nine grandchildren.
