Lauren Elaine Olguin, a 32-year-old woman from Los Angeles, California, tragically lost her life on April 12, 2016. She was fatally shot in the 500 block of North Virgil Avenue in East Hollywood. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, the incident occurred around 6 a.m. when officers responded to a call about a gunshot victim. Olguin was attending a gathering and playing cards when Philip Policarpio, a 39-year-old man, approached her.
An argument ensued, during which Policarpio began to beat Olguin before shooting her. Olguin, who was pregnant at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Policarpio, who fled the scene immediately after the shooting, was on parole for a 2001 conviction for attempted murder. He was considered armed and dangerous, and authorities launched a manhunt to locate him. The FBI added Policarpio to their Ten Most Wanted list in May 2016. He was eventually apprehended on May 31, 2016, after making a wrong turn at the San Ysidro border crossing with a woman he had recently met. Policarpio was carrying several pieces of identification and attempted to flee when border agents identified him, but he was quickly captured.
Following his arrest, Policarpio faced charges of first-degree murder and first-degree murder of a fetus. In August 2018, he pleaded no contest to these charges and admitted to a gun allegation. He was subsequently sentenced to 75 years to life in prison. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the importance of addressing such issues to prevent future tragedies.
