Emma G. Rodriguez-Estrada, a 23-year-old Latina, was tragically shot and killed on March 16, 2017, in the Green Meadows neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, the incident occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. when Rodriguez-Estrada left her apartment complex to meet her estranged husband, Andres Zambrano. The couple got into an argument while Zambrano was sitting in his sedan.
The confrontation escalated, leading Zambrano to exit his vehicle, chase Rodriguez-Estrada, and ultimately shoot her. She was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Andres Zambrano, a 26-year-old Latino, became the primary suspect in the case. He fled the scene immediately after the shooting and remained at large for several years. Zambrano was placed on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list due to his involvement in the murder. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the FBI's Fugitive Task Force worked tirelessly to locate him. Their efforts eventually led to Zambrano's arrest in Colima, Mexico, in December 2020. He was extradited to Los Angeles, where he faced charges related to the murder of Rodriguez-Estrada.
The case against Zambrano included charges of murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. His arrest and extradition were the result of a collaborative effort between the LAPD, the FBI, and Mexican authorities. Zambrano's bail was set at $2,050,000, and he was booked for an outstanding murder warrant upon his return to Los Angeles. The investigation highlighted the dedication and persistence of law enforcement agencies in bringing justice to Rodriguez-Estrada and her family. The case remains a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of continued efforts to address and prevent such tragedies.
