According to federal prosecutors, Rodriguez had identified Martinez as a potential rival Norteño gang member while Martinez was celebrating his birthday at a bar in the Mission District after attending a Golden State Warriors game with his son. Rodriguez ordered an MS-13 associate to follow Martinez out of the bar and shoot him, resulting in Martinez's death.
The case against Rodriguez and other MS-13 members was part of a larger federal investigation into the gang's activities in the Bay Area. This investigation, which involved collaboration between the Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement agencies, led to the conviction of seventeen defendants on various charges, including multiple murders and attempted murders. Rodriguez was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in these crimes, including the murder of Jorge Martinez.
