Jesse Salazar, an 18-year-old from Los Angeles, was tragically shot and killed on August 7, 2017. The investigation revealed that the shooting was likely gang-related. Jesse Salazar was a new member of the Brown Pride Sureños, a criminal street gang based in the west side of the San Fernando Valley. The suspect, identified as Juan Gomez, was also a member of the same gang and had a history of gang involvement and criminal activities. Gomez, who was 19 at the time, had been on probation for firearms possession. The motive for the shooting was believed to be a quarrel over a female, who was an ex-girlfriend of Gomez and the current girlfriend of Salazar. The two had been dating on and off for about two years.
Juan Gomez was arrested on suspicion of murder following a high-speed police pursuit that ended with his capture. The pursuit began when LAPD officers spotted Gomez and another gang associate exiting a home and getting into a black BMW. The chase reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour before the suspects surrendered. Gomez was charged with one count of murder with a firearm allegation and was held at the Van Nuys jail with a bail set at $2 million. The driver of the vehicle, Nelson Apaez, was also arrested and faced charges for fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly.
